On May 6, over 250 POWER-PAC parents, grandparents, children and other family members from across the state gathered in Springfield and spoke with nearly 100 Illinois state legislators and their staffs about important issues that affect low-income families in Illinois. For the first time ever, this event included families from 4 new COFI training expansion sites – Aurora, East St. Louis, Elgin and Evanston!

A particular focus of the legislative agenda and the advocacy day was challenging the new Governor’s budget proposal, which seeks to cut programs that are critical in supporting low-income families. A small victory occurred when the House voted while parents were in the chambers to reject the Governor’s budget proposal without a single legislator voting in favor of the budget!

Parents also advocated on an increase in the amount of money a family can earn and qualify for SNAP benefits and a bill to limit the use of punitive school discipline. Both passed through the Senate and are making their way through the House.
