As part of the Elementary Justice Campaign: Redirecting the School-to-Prison Pipeline, POWER-PAC Illinois hosted the powerful Dignity in Schools Campaigns’ Week of Action National Event in Chicago on October 27, 2018. The event brought together 120 POWER-PAC leaders and their families, with other parent and youth leaders from across the country, to push for “Counselors Not Cops!” in Chicago schools and schools nationally. Also, POWER-PAC’s advocacy partners at the Shriver Center on Poverty Law presented the findings from “Handcuffs in the Hallways: The State of Policing in Chicago Public Schools.” The event was hugely successful and helped POWER-PAC’ers to gain a commitment from the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to create a Memorandum of Understanding between the police and CPS about the training and rules for police in schools.
