In 2018, East St. Louis Parent Leaders (Parents United for Change – PUFC) won historic legislation when HB5195 passed, ensuring all students in District 189 would receive free school bus services. However, parents and community members have been seeing unreliable bus service recently.
Now, PUFC Leaders are circulating a petition calling for improved school transportation. They are highlighting how transportation problems are leading to safety issues, such as waiting or walking in bad weather.
“It’s not acceptable that our kids’ safety be at risk because they can’t find a company that will handle the loads of routes they have,” said Tashonia Hentz, a Parents United for Change member and mother of a District 189 student, to Belleville News-Democrat.
