In the third largest school district in the country, all 266,000+ children at 472 different elementary schools, now have recess, thanks to POWER-PAC’s organizing and Recess for All! Campaign. After an eventful and exciting first couple weeks of school, children, parents, and teachers are now settling into their school routine, which includes daily recess.

When POWER-PAC started their campaign, in 2006, to reinstate recess in all Chicago public schools, 82% of all CPS elementary students did NOT have recess. As part of the campaign, POWER-PAC parent leaders met with teachers and the teachers’ union, school administrators, state legislators, and public health experts. They found and created allies and garnered significant media attention, all of which built the momentum, which ultimately led to the return of recess.
