POWER-PAC parent leaders joined the Governor of Illinois twice this summer to witness the signing of new legislation into law. Both bills passed the legislature in part due to the efforts of POWER-PAC parents advocating in Springfield on behalf of low-income children and families.

On August 6, Governor Patrick Quinn and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan joined POWER-PAC and its allies at COFI’s office for a bill signing of the Payroll Card Reform law, which protects employees’ hard-earned money from being eaten away by fees. POWER-PAC is an active member of the Illinois Asset Building Group, the lead advocacy voice for this bill.

Earlier this summer POWER-PAC celebrated the signing of House Bill 5412. POWER-PAC leaders teamed up with the Chicago Community Health Workers (CHW) Local Network, to support this bill which encourages the expansion of the use of community health workers.

Additionally, as part of the Common Sense Discipline Campaign, POWER-PAC partnered with VOYCE and Illinois Safe School Alliance to help to pass Senate Bill 2793. The bill requires schools to publicly share discipline data and to plan for alternatives to punitive discipline.

Parents also helped to pass an expansion of programs for infants and toddlers and new legislation that encourage second chances by expunging youth offenses and keeping criminal records off of job applications.
