Chicago Teacher’s Union Foundation piece on building “Parent Power”

“It’s important to hear the voice of the parents,” Ellen Schumer, the Executive Director of COFI said. “Parent leaders are experts on what is happening in their families, schools and communities. In our work, they ground the issues and problem solving in their real life experiences and often find really innovative solutions to otherwise very intractable problems. Low-income parents, often far from the centers of power, are able to shape public decision-making out of their lived experiences and personal connections to the communities where they live.”
