On October 24, COFI-trained parent leaders organized a meet and greet informational event with candidates for Chicago’s first elected School Board.
Parent leader Lynn Morton was one of the parents who planned and led the event, impressing the importance of the school board election. “This is a moment in history that we should not squander,” Morton said. “We should be just as concerned about the school board election as we are about the presidential election, because this is going to hit closer to home faster.”
During the event, Aaron “Jitu” Brown, who represents the 5th District and is fighting against inequity and racism in the education system, spoke with parents about gaps in education funding. He said he would join COFI and POWER-PAC IL on a bus to Springfield to ask for more funding from the state.
“We have to band together,” Brown said. “I am a vessel for your voice, that’s it.”
