\u201cI always say parents are needed for more than just the picture. Our voices need to be heard because you can\u2019t tell my story like I can. I bring lived experiences. That\u2019s why we go to Springfield and speak directly to the policymakers so the actual voices of our communities can be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Michelle will tell you she was always the quiet one that sat in the back of the room. Her mother and sister, Lynn<\/a><\/span>, who were also COFI-trained and in POWER-PAC IL<\/a><\/span>, never seemed afraid to speak up. But, that didn\u2019t mean Michelle didn\u2019t have anything to say. Instead, she would whisper suggestions to Lynn or to other parent leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n

That all started to change with the birth of her daughter, <\/span>Deiondra<\/span>. When her daughter was speaking more, Michelle noticed a lisp. Armed with everything she knew from COFI, she went to the school and spoke up about her daughter\u2019s IEP minutes and what she knew her daughter was entitled to.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI knew through <\/span>Self, Family and Team + Team Building<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, that parents have to fight to get what they need,\u201d she said. \u201cWithout my mom and sister being beside me, I had to become an advocate for my child and move to the front of the room.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle has said she always wanted to speak up and advocate for her neighbors and for more parents to be at the table. She says if you\u2019re doing something you\u2019re scared of, that\u2019s when you know you\u2019re doing what needs to be done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why she and hundreds of COFI-trained parents in POWER-PAC IL often travel to Springfield, Illinois, to the Capitol Building to talk to legislators. It\u2019s become an annual tradition for COFI and POWER-PAC IL, called \u201cMoms on a Mission<\/a><\/span>,\u201d or MOMs for short, and takes place the weekend before Mother\u2019s Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

For many parents and their children, it\u2019s the first time they’ve traveled to Springfield and spoken with their lawmakers. For others, like Michelle, they\u2019ve been doing it for several years and have fond memories of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle says <\/span>Deiondra<\/span> was one of the first \u201cCOFI babies\u201d – someone\u2019s child growing up around parent leaders and going to event after event with their parents. Michelle said her daughter loves attending Moms on a Mission and has held a sign at rallies since she was small. She even texted COFI staff members and her mother about her school lunches when they were working on a campaign for healthier school lunches as well as used what she\u2019s learned about the changes POWER PAC fought for in the student code of conduct to advocate for herself as well as other students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpringfield and Moms on a Mission has led to several victories, like the Illinois State Child Tax Credit, winning recess for all, funding for early intervention, and more,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle said that\u2019s why it\u2019s so important for parents and families to tell their stories. They have a unique perspective and oftentimes have the solutions to the challenges their children and communities face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as Michelle looks to COFI\u2019s future, she said her dream is for more \u201cquiet\u201d parents like herself to move from the back of the room to the front of the room and know they have a voice and the importance of using\u00a0 it for their communities and their child\u2019s education.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI also want to see COFI go worldwide,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
