Meet Yolanda! She’s always had a strong voice and community presence on the West Side, but it wasn\u2019t until she had her daughter that she faced barriers and challenges for the first time. When her daughter was born, she had to look for Early Intervention (EI) options and didn\u2019t realize how powerful it would be for her daughter\u2019s outcomes later in life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEarly intervention changed my daughter\u2019s life,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting at three months old, Yolanda\u2019s daughter received all sorts of therapies, including speech, physical, and occupational. Yolanda said that repetition for the next three years was critical to her growth and vocabulary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t do any baby talk either,\u201d she said. \u201cJust building routing and giving her consistency. <\/span>In the beginning, it\u2019s so important to create that structure and tap into resources.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Many families, especially families of color, don\u2019t often have a streamlined process with EI, though. Some families are on waitlists for months, and some kids even miss out because the waitlist is so long and it\u2019s only available to children ages 0-3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why COFI and POWER-PAC IL leaders like Yolanda advocate for and speak out on several early childhood and care issues through the<\/span>\u00a0Early Learning Campaign<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/a>. Parents know how important those first few years of life are and want to see more funding for EI services, child care for all, and more for their kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even afterward, the system doesn\u2019t make it easy for parents. Yolanda said she was one of the lucky ones. Her daughter was immediately admitted to preschool as a diverse learner after her EI services ended, when she was 3 years old. Yolanda said most diverse learners have to wait until they are 4 or 5 before they start preschool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But when it came to kindergarten and getting an IEP (Individualized Education Program) through a nearby school, she discovered that the school down the street couldn\u2019t meet her daughter\u2019s needs. They had to leave the community and travel farther.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All of Yolanda\u2019s experiences have propelled her into other leadership roles both within and outside of COFI. Not only has she been a Co-Chair of the <\/span>Early Learning Campaign<\/span><\/i>, but she\u2019s also joined the <\/span>National Center on Parent, Family, and Community Engagement\u2019s (NCPFCE) Family Voice Team<\/span><\/a><\/span> to elevate the importance of Head Start, served on advisory committees, and is an <\/span>Executive Committee membe<\/span>r<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>mentor<\/span><\/a><\/span> on Governor JB Pritzker\u2019s <\/span>Early Learning Council<\/span><\/a><\/span>. She\u2019s bringing her wisdom, passion, and lived experiences to advance early childhood policies and advocate for diverse learners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo one else is going to fight and speak up for our children as much as their parents do,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I advocate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
