Nearly 10 years ago, Silvia didn\u2019t know what COFI was until a classmate from her English class invited her to a training. She thought she heard \u201ccoffee\u201d and thought: \u201cOk, let\u2019s go get coffee!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silvia, along with Elgin leaders Esther and Nisela, are \u201cveterans\u201d of the Elgin branch and have been there the longest. She\u2019s held many roles in her branch and across COFI\/POWER-PAC IL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s been a trainer in <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/the-work\/the-cofi-way\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COFI Way<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community healer when parents explored peer-to-peer solutions to help fill gaps in mental healthcare, and a proud parent leader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she first arrived in the United States, she came with the same hope and aspiration that many immigrants share: \u201cthe American dream.\u201d But, after joining COFI and taking training, she said, \u201cI realized there was more to it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COFI training and the POWER-PAC IL parents helped her turn her dreams and goals into clearer, easier-to-follow steps by breaking each goal down step-by-step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first phase of training <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/the-work\/the-cofi-way\/the-three-phases\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phase 1: Self, Family &amp; Team + Team Building<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), she learned about herself, her goals outside her family, and how to find support to reach them. That framework of starting with yourself has stayed with her and continues to shape her today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I really liked and still like about COFI is how they help parents grow in leadership, but they don\u2019t leave you alone. They hold your hand and accompany you so that you can continue to grow,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s grown from a stay-at-home mother new to the United States into a powerful voice for families in Elgin and throughout the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silvia and the Elgin branch have also been part of POWER-PAC IL campaigns that delivered real wins for families in their communities. One example is helping win<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2021\/08\/12\/elgin-district-u-46-to-provide-free-breakfasts-and-lunches-to-all-students-in-2021-22-school-year\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">universal free breakfast for students in her school district<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, District U-46, which helped ensure that children who catch the earliest buses arrive ready to learn. \u201cIf they didn\u2019t have breakfast, how were they supposed to be ready to learn?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, as a peer trainer in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COFI Way<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Silvia has helped build COFI and POWER-PAC IL\u2019s reach beyond Elgin. She has traveled to Aurora and other communities that are interested in training and working with parent leaders. As someone who once trembled at the thought of speaking in public, she\u2019s come a long way!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her dream is simple &#8211; she wants COFI training available everywhere. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p><p>Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p><p>Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p><p>Fast forward to 2024: during a training with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"\/get-training\/cofi-center-for-action-and-learning\/\">The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p><p>\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p><p>This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
