Eleven years ago, Liliana was picking up her son from school and was growing worried about him. He was in detention almost every day, and she wasn\u2019t sure what to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Parent Liaison at the school told Liliana about a training that might help her, so she went, not fully understanding what she was getting herself into. She had missed the Orientation and sat in the back, too shy to speak for the first few training sessions. As she watched and listened, she grew deeply connected when she realized she was not the only parent in the room struggling with something – whether it was a child misbehaving, finishing goals, or other challenges in their life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery session was something new to me and stuck with me,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n

That was Liliana\u2019s introduction to COFI\u2019s <\/span>Phase 1: Self, Family & Team + Team Building<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/em> training. It felt, she said, like an awakening. She set personal goals, started understanding why her son might be acting out, and learned how to tap into her leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

After that, she threw herself into COFI and started doing the advanced parent training. At one point, she was taking two trainings at the same time. She did another round of Phase 1 training in Elgin and was simultaneously doing <\/span>Phase 2: Community Outreach & Action <\/span><\/i>in Aurora.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As her training deepened, she started seeing her community differently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI saw inequities everywhere,\u201d she said, recalling how one day she was paying closer attention to the kids walking to school in the rain and snow. She never felt bothered by it before, and now she was wondering what she could do to change how the school district managed school buses.<\/span><\/p>\n

She talked to COFI\u2019s Co-Director of Local Organizing, Sara, and asked what she could do and learned about which school board meetings were open to the public. She started collecting signatures and delivered them to the board. Within a year of starting, Aurora had more school buses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you taste victory, you keep asking what\u2019s next,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s how the Aurora branch is. We\u2019re very active and always moving.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within her branch and across POWER-PAC IL, Liliana has held many roles, but she\u2019s one of the leaders who has been in Aurora since the beginning. She was even part of the group that named themselves Padres Activos because they were never passive and were always on the move.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Liliana is also a peer trainer and COFI Board of Trustees<\/a><\/span> member. She said she\u2019s living a long-term goal she set for herself many years ago – tapping into other parents’ leadership potential the same way COFI training did for her.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
