Cornelia, or Cye Cye, has dedicated her life to showing up for people and for her community. As a home care worker, a proud auntie and great auntie, and lifelong Chicagoan, she found her community in COFI\u2019s parent-led membership organization, POWER-PAC IL<\/a><\/span>, especially in the Southside branch, which the parents have named Southside Parents United Roundtable.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach month, I know I can show up to my branch meetings, have my voice heard, and work together with my community toward our collective goals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Right now, one of their collective goals is focused on improving access to healthcare. For Cye Cye and the rest of her branch, it\u2019s deeply personal.<\/p>\n

She and many COFI-trained parents receive healthcare coverage through Medicaid. Now, the federal administration\u2019s rollbacks aren\u2019t just bad policy but will be life or death. Parents and families will be forced to choose between spending money on health, food, rent, and more.<\/p>\n

Cye Cye and other Southside and POWER-PAC IL leaders have spoken up<\/a><\/span> over and over about the impact these cuts would have on them and the difficulty they face in proving they\u2019re working. It means they have to take time off work, travel outside of their communities to public aid offices, and wait hours past their scheduled time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe impact of these cuts would affect all families – Black and Brown communities,\u201d she said.\u201cFor working people like myself, that\u2019s not a minor inconvenience. It\u2019s forcing me to choose between getting a paycheck and showing up for my patients who need care on a day-to-day basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to healthcare coverage, the Southside branch is deeply passionate about improving access to mental healthcare. The branch is working on a resource guide, similar to the West Side’s, to help their community understand fees and low-cost options available in their community.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many parents, children, and neighbors have been through a crisis and don\u2019t know where to go to get help,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why this is very critical for our communities to have a resource guide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cye Cye often thinks about her grandfather, who worked for years as a dishwasher at The Berghoff. He had Medicaid, family, community, and lived a long life. She wants the same thing, especially for the next generation, and her dream is to make sure that the people who come after her have more opportunities than she did.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my great nephews wants me to go fishing with him, like my grandfather used to take me,\u201d she said. \u201cI want him and all the people in my community to go further, live long lives, and continue teaching the next generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts. Change begins with a parent\u2019s dream, and when they unite with others and partners like Leah, remarkable transformations can ripple
