Meet Letty! Maria \u201cLetty\u201d Toribio grew up watching her grandfather and mother fight for their communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe would say to me, \u2018Someone always came before us and advocated for schools, hospitals, and parks, and we should honor those people. That\u2019s always stuck in my mind,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Letty, a strong and vocal advocate inside and outside of COFI\/POWER-PAC IL\u2019s Northwest Branch, has been with the organization for nearly 20 years. Originally, she came to COFI training in her daughter\u2019s school for a \u201cmorning snack\u201d of coffee and bread.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, she was a bit hesitant and would sit quietly in the back, observing. At the time, not many groups or organizations provided bilingual interpretation, so she never liked sitting in the front in case they didn\u2019t have a Spanish interpreter. But, once she saw and met COFI trainers who spoke Spanish and led sessions, she quickly moved to the front and immediately felt comfortable speaking up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since joining, Letty, along with leaders like Felipa<\/a><\/span>, have become one of the founding forces of POWER-PAC IL\u2019s third branch, the Northwest Side. Letty said Felipa was already an experienced leader when she joined, and together they\u2019ve helped grow their branch as well as others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember going to Aurora and Elgin and doing training on how they can have their own branch,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to helping other communities build parent power, she\u2019s been in COFI and POWER-PAC IL for some of its biggest wins and campaigns, including rewriting and adding restorative justice to the Chicago Public Schools\u2019 (CPS) student code of conduct, passing recess for all, removing police from CPS and designing a comprehensive Whole School Safety (WSS) Framework, and fighting school fees that prevented students from graduating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through it all, she keeps her grandfather and family\u2019s commitment to advocacy with her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I see someone struggling, it\u2019s my instinct to help them and do better,\u201d she said. \u201cWe cannot abandon our responsibilities as a community.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Letty\u2019s focus and much of her branch\u2019s focus has turned to policies and solutions around mental health and healing – especially with the recent launch of the \u201cShining a Light\u201d report. She and many leaders on the Northwest Side have been trained in peer-to-peer mental health support and have led circles throughout their community to people who cannot afford therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n

She dreams of expanding healthcare access and continuing her passion for peer-to-peer work to more schools and families because she knows that advocating for children means getting to the root of the problem that their families face – poverty, unhealed trauma, a lack of access to healthcare, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always advocated for kids, but we also have to focus on parents\u2019 healing. Supporting parents supports students.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
