Meet Marisol! She\u2019s the proud mother of four. When she was first invited to join a COFI training, she said that, at the time, there were tensions and conflicts with her children as they grew older.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy main focus when I came to COFI was to have my family more united,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t know what to expect from COFI. Her friend, Maria, invited her to a meeting and when she came, she immediately recognized other parents she knew. As the training progressed, she said one mother, Liliana, told her \u201cYou are a leader. Marisol, you\u2019re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose words stayed with me. I felt empowered, and those words gave me the strength to come back home and build a stronger relationship with my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

And her family noticed! Her daughter, Ashley, has said, \u201c[I]f it wasn’t for COFI, my mom would not have evolved as a mother, because it opened her mind, it taught her many things she didn’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Marisol says that her family is united, and each of her children is dreaming big for themselves and their community. She helps them break down their goals and take steps to reach them – just like COFI taught her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels good to help my community because I know that it helps in a positive way,\u201d says Ashley.<\/p>\n

Since joining COFI over five years ago, Marisol\u2019s leadership hasn\u2019t stopped growing either! She\u2019s been a branch delegate for her POWER-PAC IL branch in Aurora, Vice President of POWER-PAC IL, and is a trained peer trainer who teaches others The COFI Way<\/em><\/a>.<\/span> But, what\u2019s really impactful is how her family\u2019s become more united and seen changes in her since joining.<\/p>\n

As she looks ahead to the future, her dream is to pass on to others what COFI has taught her about supporting parent leadership, becoming a better leader within her own family, and visioning for a better future.<\/p>\n

Marisol\u2019s family story is a reminder that parents, as leaders of families, are \u201cnatural\u201d community and policy leaders, when given the chance. And, with COFI\u2019s trainings, parents can create powerful changes within themselves and apply what they have learned to their families, communities, and the larger systems that affect families.<\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
