Meet Larry and Carmen! Larry is the Executive Director at The Children\u2019s Agenda<\/a><\/span> (TCA), and Carmen is the Parent Leadership Manager. As an organization, TCA aims to improve children\u2019s health, education, and success by advocating for effective, equitable policies. They\u2019re using The COFI Way<\/em><\/span><\/a> to organize parents in New York.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Larry: Changing an \u201cIvory Tower\u201d Approach<\/h4>\n

Larry, a longtime organizer, came to Rochester after a long career with Citizen Action of Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

He stumbled across TCA when they were looking for part-time fundraising support, and he eventually became a full-time team member. He says when he first started, he remembers it being \u201civory tower-ish.\u201d There was a lot of important research and analysis in their policy work, but it was missing a key piece – a powerful base of people directly impacted by policy and systems.<\/p>\n

He was seeing other organizations focusing on advocating for others. But COFI\u2019s approach and training focused on empowering people to advocate for themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cFacts are important, but building power comes from the people directly affected by the problems. That\u2019s what changes decision makers\u2019 minds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/span><\/a> helped TCA include real people in their work. And, seeing people understand their own power to make change, he says, is one of the most rewarding aspects of his work.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t have policy changes on the issues without having the people directly experiencing those issues leading the change, and that\u2019s what COFI understands. We\u2019ve expanded our parent organizing work to fund and train other organizations (in New York City, North Country, and soon other areas) to develop a statewide base of parent leaders for advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carmen: The COFI Way<\/i> Helps Define Our Work with Parents<\/h4>\n
\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an amazing effect when people really feel a sense of community, a sense of family. [The COFI Way]<\/em> has really been the real drive that takes them to a whole different level in advocacy.\u201d – Carmen<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Meanwhile, Carmen came to TCA after three decades in the Rochester City School District. Carmen says the move to TCA, coupled with training from the COFI Center, really empowered her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m making a difference for others, especially for parents. They look for advice, they look for that sense of connection, and it\u2019s really neat to see it all come together using The COFI Way<\/em> as the base,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But organizing parents isn\u2019t always easy. Supporting their goals and ensuring the movement moves in one direction becomes challenging when new parents join. They don\u2019t always feel a sense of belonging right away, or they might have different directions they want to follow.<\/p>\n

That sense of community and teambuilding established in Phase 1 of The COFI Way<\/em> is critical for parents coming together to achieve one common goal, she explains. And, it\u2019s also what helps TCA define its work and goals with parents.<\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
