Meet Ms. Rose! She is the proud mother of two now-adult daughters, plus one, Grandmother of three and a longtime activist in her South Side Englewood community, the COFI Board President and Chair, and President-Emeritus of POWER-PAC IL<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

For over 20 years, she\u2019s been a COFI-trained parent leader. For many years , she\u2019s been a COFI Parent Peer Trainer, training organizers at the COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, parents in Illinois, and traveling across the country to train parents and organizational leaders.<\/p>\n

Helping Trainers and Parents See Their Gifts<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019ve trained with Ms. Rose at the COFI Center, you know she leads with love.<\/p>\n

That same love, she says, is what organizers must bring when working with parents. It\u2019s hard for parents to see their own leadership and gifts when they are navigating complex systems and their voices aren\u2019t always valued by those who hold power. That\u2019s why Phase 1: Self, Family & Team<\/em><\/a><\/span> is so crucial for trainers. It helps trainers pull out the gifts and strengths of their leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrainers and organizers are some of the folks that can help parents see those things, because they’re pulling it out of them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Dream: Building Parent Power Worldwide<\/h4>\n

Over the years, Ms. Rose has trained groups from Boston to Los Angeles. She gushes over the organizations using The COFI Way<\/em> to work with parents and meet their communities\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think about the folks in Miami and in Boston. So many places have taken our training, and they’ve gone to the next level,\u201d she said. \u201cOur training gives organizations the tools to work with parents and come up with a sound strategy for success in their community.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why her dream is for parents and organizations to be able to focus on the \u201cexcellence of this training\u201d without worrying about funding. She wants to see The COFI Way<\/em> go worldwide and invites funders and organizations to invest in this life-changing work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe success of our 30 years comes from the voice of parents, who really are the experts in navigating life\u2019s challenges and deserve respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
