Meet Arthur! He works at the Center for the Study of Social Policy<\/a><\/span> and supports the Early Childhood Learning and Innovation Network for Communities (EC-LINC)<\/a><\/span> and the Parent Leader Network (PLN)<\/a><\/span>. The PLN provides a space for parents to collaborate and advocate for parent voice and leadership in early childhood systems. Staff and parents from member organizations were trained in Phases 1-3<\/em> of The COFI Way<\/em> from 2019-2023 at the COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Parents Leading Change and Organizations Leading with Their Values<\/h4>\n

One challenge Arthur noticed in his work was that communities often said they wanted to partner with parents, but they focused on organizational and system priorities rather than the parents\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur model has always been about authentically partnering with parents and encouraging the organizations to provide space for parents to have autonomy and decision-making around the different priorities that they’re interested in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The COFI Way<\/em> offered a \u201cstrong curriculum\u201d for the network to train organizations to do exactly that: support parents, organize, and help develop advocates and leaders. And it\u2019s led to real change and decision-making led by parents!<\/p>\n

In Palm Beach, Florida, parents became part of a governing body providing direct input on investments of millions in community funding for maternal and mental health. In Utah County, Utah, parents transformed how their local community center worked with Spanish-speaking families.<\/p>\n

Even after national PLN funding ended and formal meetings stopped, communities have continued to host COFI training. \u201cThat\u2019s really exciting to see that folks are still utilizing the model,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis model is an opportunity for organizations to live into the values that so many nonprofits and community groups talk about, wanting to listen and partner with communities. This is a concrete way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Dream: Truly Embracing Parent Leadership<\/h4>\n

His dream? To see organizations truly embrace parent leadership as a practice and go beyond talking about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t tell parents they can do whatever they want, then pull the rug out from under them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His work and the PLN show what COFI has known for 30 years: The COFI Way<\/em> can catalyze a national parent-led movement. Parents from New York to California and Florida to Washington are using COFI\u2019s proven model to turn their hopes and dreams into action.<\/p>\n

Meet Leah, a longtime partner and supporter of COFI!<\/p>

She partnered with COFI on a parent-led project that COFI Organizer Talibah<\/span><\/a> and other parents worked on to address the lack of developmental screenings.<\/p>

As the director of a statewide community collaboration project, Leah collaborated with seven communities, including Englewood, to boost early learning enrollment. Englewood parents, armed with training from COFI, discovered that fear of stigma and mistrust of systems led some families to avoid developmental screenings for early intervention and special education.<\/p>

Parents pitched an idea to Leah: with funding, parents could support other parents to navigate the early intervention system and the special education system to get children in their community the support they needed.<\/p>

Leah funded the project and parents did it!<\/p>

Fast forward to 2024: during a training with The COFI Center for Action and Learning<\/a><\/span>, Leah visited Parker Academy in Englewood (pictured below) and met parents who were initially part of the project and were still benefiting from it!<\/p>

\u201cI got really emotional about a dad whose son benefited from the program and thrived,\u201d she said. \u201cThe parent-led project in Englewood shows that with a little bit of seed money, families can lead and make their innovations last. It is a systems change success story. This is how things work when parent voices are at the table.\u201d<\/p>

This anniversary and Leah\u2019s dream serve as a reminder of the connections forged through parent-led efforts.
