POWER-PAC Executive Committee

Louise Evans
Louise Evans is an African-American grandmother who has served on the LSC at Nicholson School in Englewood. She is a founding member of the DEAR Parent Team, on the Englewood Parent Council, Team Englewood and Imagine Englewood IF.

Alicia Gregorio
Alicia Gregorio is a Mexican-immigrant mother of four who lives in the Austin community and is an active parent leader in Humboldt Park, where her children attend school.  At West Park Academy, she is the President of the Bilingual Advisory Council, Vice President of the No Child Left Behind Parent Advisory Council, and a member of the Local School Council.  In addition, Alicia is active on the early learning committee and serves as a Head Start Ambassador and COFI Parent Peer Trainer.

Felipa Mena
Felipa Mena is a Mexican-immigrant mother and a member of the Andersen School and Wells High School LSC.   She is President of the board of West Town Leadership United. In addition, she has organized with the Chicago Workers' Collaborative, a day labor organizing group and is active in many immigrants' rights struggles.

Ethel Mitchell
Ethel Mitchell is an African American grandmother who serves on the LSC at Howe School and is Co-Chair of the NCLB committee. She is also on the PTA and a member of the Austin-Wide Parent Network. She is retired.

Lynn Morton, Co-Chair
Lynn Morton is an African American mother who was a founder of the Brunson team, Parents United for a Better Brunson (PUBB), in Austin and is active with the Austin-Wide Parent Network and with the New Garden Missionary Baptist Church. She was Regional Chair and Brunson Chair of the No Child Left Behind committees, and is a COFI Parent Peer Trainer. Currently Ms. Morton is the coordinator of the Austin Peace Center.

Marietta Morton
Marietta Morton is an African American grandmother who has lived and been active in the Austin area since she moved there over 30 years ago. Her grandson attends Brunson school and she was a founding member of the Brunson parent team, PUBB.  She is active in the Austin-Wide Parent Network and is currently serving as a "Peacemaker" in the Austin Peace Center, where she is mentoring children with discipline problems.

Ruby Murphy
Ruby Murphy is an African-American mother and grandmother from the Near North / Cabrini Green area.  Ruby is one of the founding members of Cabrini Mothers in Power, a tenant organization of public housing residents which is organizing for more early educations programs and a safer community.  Ruby is also working as a peacemaker at Wells High School with the Austin Peace Center and is a Head Start Ambassador.

MaryAnn Plummer
MaryAnn Plummer is an African American grandmother at Nicholson school, where she is active in the DEAR parent team and is the president of the parent patrol. She also has served on the LSC, the No Child Left Behind Parent Advisory Committee and the Englewood Parent Council.

Concepción Saldivar
Concepción Saldivar is a Mexican-immigrant mother of three whose children attend Lee Elementary in the West Lawn Community.  Concepción originally got involved with POWER-PAC when she lived in the Pilsen community, through COFI’s partnership with Pilsen Alliance at Whittier Elementary School.  After moving to the West Lawn community, she continued organizing and building POWER-PAC’s strength.  She is active in the Early Learning Campaign and serves as a Head Start Ambassador.

Laurella Scaggs
Laurella Scaggs is an African American grandmother and LSC member at the Brunson School. She is co-chair of the Austin-Wide Parent Network and is a member of Brunson's parent team, PUBB, parent patrol and the No Child Left Behind Parent Committee. She also is a "Peacemaker" in the Austin Peace Center, where she mentors children with discipline problems.

Nelida Torres, Co-Chair
Nelly Torres is a Puerto Rican parent and former director of the Von Humboldt Community Center at Von Humboldt School in West Town/Humboldt Park and on the LSC. She also is chairperson of the No Child Left Behind Parent Committee at Von Humboldt and at the cluster level and secretary of the citywide NCLB Parent Committee. Also, she is the conductor for the Von Humboldt Children's Steel Band. Nelly is trained as a Parent Peer Trainer and is mother of four children in Chicago Public Schools.
